VTT F9X M5/M8 Ultimate Lightweight Front Brake Kit
F90 M5 / F91 M8 / F92 M8 / F93 M8
Nearly 60 lbs off the front. 26 lbs of rotating mass eliminated. 17″ wheel fitment. 6-piston calipers. 13″ vented rotors.
The VTT F9X M5/M8 Ultimate Lightweight Front Brake Kit was designed to deliver massive weight reduction and increased wheel and tire flexibility without turning your M5 or M8 into a single-purpose drag car.
Don’t confuse this with the typical lightweight “drag brake” kit.
Many non-vented 4-piston drag brake systems are designed primarily for one thing — making a pass down the drag strip. They sacrifice rotor mass, thermal capacity, and overall braking capability in pursuit of the lowest possible number on the scale.
The VTT F9X Ultimate Lightweight Front Brake Kit takes a different approach.
Using 13″ HD vented rotors and genuine VTT 6-piston calipers, we’ve removed approximately 60 lbs of unsprung weight from the front of the F9X while retaining the braking capability needed for a heavy, extremely fast street and drag vehicle.
Of that reduction, approximately 26 lbs is rotating mass, with another 34 lbs removed from the remaining unsprung brake assembly.
And the weight reduction is only the beginning.
The compact VTT brake package also allows fitment of 17″ front wheels, completely changing the wheel and tire options available for the F9X platform.
That means lightweight drag wheels, drag radials, slicks, taller sidewalls, and countless purpose-built drag combinations that simply aren’t possible with the massive factory brakes.
Less brake weight.
Less rotating mass.
Smaller and lighter wheel options.
More tire options.
More traction potential.
Real braking capability.
The Factory Rotor Alone Weighs More Than Our Entire Brake Assembly
This is the number that really puts the F9X factory brake weight into perspective:
A single factory F9X front rotor weighs 12.7 lbs MORE than the complete VTT brake assembly on that corner.
Not just our rotor.
Our entire assembly.
That means the complete:
- 13″ HD Vented Rotor
- CNC 7075 Aluminum Rotor Hat
- VTT 6-Piston Caliper
- F9X-Specific Mounting Bracket
still weighs 12.7 lbs LESS than the factory rotor by itself.
Across the front axle, the complete VTT conversion removes approximately 60 lbs of unsprung mass.
60 LBS OFF THE FRONT
Removing 60 lbs from the front of any performance vehicle is significant.
Removing approximately 60 lbs of unsprung mass is even better.
But there’s another important distinction within that number.
26 LBS OF ROTATING MASS
Approximately 26 lbs of the total reduction comes directly from rotating mass through the dramatically lighter rotor and hat assemblies.
Rotating mass must be accelerated both forward with the vehicle and rotationally around the axle. Reducing rotational inertia means less energy is required to accelerate that assembly.
For a vehicle being optimized for acceleration and ET reduction, this is exactly where you want to remove weight.
34 LBS OF ADDITIONAL UNSPRUNG MASS
The remaining approximately 34 lbs comes from the calipers, brackets, and other non-rotating portions of the brake assembly.
That means you’re removing approximately 60 lbs directly from the front suspension assemblies before changing anything else on the vehicle.
17″ WHEEL FITMENT CHANGES EVERYTHING
For serious F9X performance builds, this may be one of the biggest advantages of the entire conversion.
The VTT F9X brake kit allows fitment of 17″ front wheels.
The massive factory brake package severely limits wheel diameter and, as a result, limits the wheel and tire combinations available for the car.
The VTT system removes that limitation.
Dropping down to a 17″ wheel opens up a huge range of performance-oriented combinations, including:
- Lightweight drag wheels
- Drag radials
- Bias-ply tires
- Full slicks
- Taller-sidewall tire combinations
- Purpose-built drag racing wheel and tire packages
This gives F9X owners far greater freedom to optimize the car around weight, traction, tire construction, sidewall, and overall drag-strip performance.
And the Weight Savings Can Go Far Beyond 60 LBS
The approximately 60-lb reduction is from the brake conversion alone.
Once the factory brakes are no longer dictating wheel diameter, you can take the weight reduction significantly further.
Replacing the large, heavy factory wheel and tire combination with a lightweight 17″ drag setup can remove even more rotating and unsprung mass from the front axle.
So the VTT brake kit doesn’t simply save 60 lbs.
It unlocks the ability to remove additional rotating mass through your wheel and tire selection while dramatically expanding your available tire options.
For AWD F9X builds in particular, the ability to select a tire package around maximum available traction rather than factory brake clearance can be a substantial advantage.
More sidewall.
More tire choices.
More traction options.
Less rotating mass.
And none of it is possible if the factory brakes won’t fit inside the wheel.
Not a Single-Pass Drag Brake Kit
Weight reduction is easy if you’re willing to sacrifice braking capability.
We weren’t.
The F9X M5 and M8 are heavy vehicles, and modified examples are capable of extraordinary horsepower, acceleration, and trap speeds.
That’s why VTT uses a 13″ HD vented rotor and 6-piston caliper rather than a small non-vented rotor and minimal caliper designed primarily around making a single pass.
The goal was straightforward:
Remove as much weight as possible without giving up the braking system required for a fast, heavy car.
The result is a system suitable for:
- Street Driving
- Drag Racing
- High-Performance Street Use
- Moderate Track Duty
You get the wheel clearance and massive weight reduction normally associated with a drag brake conversion while retaining a large vented rotor and serious 6-piston braking system.

Important Disclaimer
VTT HD brake kits are designed for street use and drag racing, with moderate track use when properly configured with the appropriate pad compound.
Always operate your vehicle within your abilities and the capabilities of the braking system.
Bedding Procedure — CRITICAL
Brake pads must be properly bedded to achieve full braking performance.
Failure to properly bed the pads can result in dramatically reduced braking effectiveness and pad glazing.
If glazing occurs:
- Remove the affected components as necessary.
- Properly prepare/sand the pad friction surface.
- Reinstall the components.
- Repeat the complete bedding procedure before demanding maximum braking performance.
Do not judge the braking capability of the system before the pads have been properly bedded.
Complete bedding instructions are included with every VTT brake kit.
